Bangladesh Government Introduces A Dynamic Payment Plan To Ensure That Power Supply Continues From The Godda Power Plant

Nov 29, 2024

Adani Power, which happens to be a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Adani Group which is led by the global business tycoon Gautam Adani, is quite likely to maintain a stable power supply from its Godda power plant to Bangladesh even amidst the ongoing controversies. This decision was taken after the introduction of a dynamic payment plan by Bangladesh authority for all electricity providers including the Adani Group. This will ensure that electricity is supplied uninterruptedly in Bangladesh. The Adani Bangladesh project will also be able to continue its operations as per the power purchase agreement which was signed between the global conglomerate and the Bangladesh government.

The Current Power Situation In Bangladesh

For nearly two years now, the Adani Group has been supplying electricity to the Bangladesh grid from its Godda power plant in Jharkhand. This has allowed Bangladesh to ensure that the power scarcity is mitigated. The various commercial and industrial operations in Bangladesh were also carried out smoothly and effectively. However, during the past few months, there has been massive political distress in Bangladesh. The government has also been suffering from an enhanced economic crisis.

Economic problems started in Bangladesh after the Russian-Ukraine turmoil in 2022. Since then, the country has been facing severe financial distress. There were a lot of political protests held by the students as well which led to the ouster of the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The situation in Bangladesh became so severe that the Bangladesh government was no longer able to pay for the electricity which was being supplied to it by the Adani Group. This led to mounting dues.

Currently, the dues add up to around 800 million USD. This has caused a lot of hindrances for the Adani Group as it has started facing difficulties in sourcing coal for power generation for the Adani Bangladesh project. The company had already warned the Bangladesh government of a complete power supply halt if the pending payments were not cleared soon enough. At the end of October, Adani Power had already reduced its supply to Bangladesh from 1,400 MW to around 700-800 MW. In case the dues are still not cleared, Adani Group will have to completely cut down the power supply.

Recent Efforts Being Taken Up By The Bangladesh Government For Clearing The Dues

As per recent news, the Bangladesh government has started making efforts to clear outstanding payments. 96 million USD was paid per month in an attempt to clear the mounting dues. A new letter of credit was also issued for an additional 170 million USD. The Bangladesh interim government which is led by the Nobel Laureate Muhammad Fouzal Kabir Khan has already been in talks with the Adani Group. The government has already mentioned that it is trying its best to ensure that the dues are cleared and the project operations can be carried out in a smooth and streamlined manner.

Once the pending payments are cleared, the Adani Group will be able to ensure that the electricity supply is not hampered. The country will no longer have to suffer from power scarcity. The needs of the people of Bangladesh will also be well attended to. The various industrial and residential operations can also be carried out smoothly. The Adani Group will also be able to recover from the losses that it incurred over the past few months because of the non-payment of dues.

The Impact of the Adani Bangladesh Project

The Adani Bangladesh project has had a big role to play in ensuring that Bangladesh’s growing demands for electricity are met. For a considerable amount of time, the Bangladesh government has been suffering from increased energy scarcity. This caused it to suffer from frequent blackouts and industrial operations were also hampered. With the Adani Bangladesh project, this energy demand was mitigated to a considerable extent. An uninterrupted supply of electricity became available in the homes of Bangladesh and that too at a reduced cost. This ensured that the various activities could be carried out smoothly and effectively without any kind of distress.

An Overview Of The Adani Bangladesh Project

The Adani Bangladesh project is indeed one of the most remarkable projects being taken up by the Adani Group. It is also the first transnational project. This project involves supplying electricity generated from the Adani Godda power plant in Jharkhand to the Bangladesh national grid. The second unit of this project received a commercial operations date on 26th June 2023. All the reliability run tests including the commercial operation tests of this unit were completed on 25th June 2023 in the presence of Power Grid Corporation of Bangladesh and BPDP officials. On 6th April 2023, the first unit of the plant also achieved competition. Each of these units has a capacity of 800 MW. This makes the total capacity of the plant 1,600 MW.

The Adani Godda power plant is an ultra-supercritical thermal power plant which has been constructed with highly advanced electricity. As per the power purchase agreement, the Adani Group is supposed to supply 1,496 MW of power from the Godda power plant to Bangladesh. This power is being supplied through a 400kV dedicated power transmission line which is connected to the Bangladesh grid. Although the project operations were hampered considerably during the COVID-19 phase, the Adani Group completed the project within a record time. The project also has various highly advanced technologies installed which has ensured that the impact on the environment is minimised considerably.

Conclusion

Even amidst the various controversies of the Adani Bangladesh project, the Adani Group has managed to ensure that there is a consistent supply of electricity in Bangladesh. Once the political crisis in Bangladesh normalises, the global conglomerate will once again resume electricity supply in the country. The people’s lives will also change for the better.
